Our History

A Historic San Francisco Landmark

For over a century, the Potrero Hill Neighborhood House has stood at the heart of Potrero Hill—a grassroots, community-driven center built to serve those most in need.

Housed in a historic San Francisco landmark designed by renowned architect Julia Morgan, The Nabe is more than a building. It's a safe space, a second home, and a source of strength for generations.

The Nabe differs from other community organizations because of our staff's multi-generational ties to the community, our commitment to treating those being served like family, and our deep roots in Potrero Hill.

Why We're Here

This is a neighborhood fighting for opportunity in the shadow of systemic inequality, and The Nabe shows up every day for those who need it most. Our doors are open to anyone who needs a meal, a listening ear, resources, or simply a place to belong.

Who We Serve

The Potrero Hill Neighborhood House serves Potrero Hill, Dogpatch, and other southeast communities in San Francisco. Our work largely, but not exclusively, concentrates on assisting and advocating for the underserved: low-income youth, seniors, and families of color living in or near public housing developments such as the Potrero Terrace & Annex.

Limited Resources

Those we serve typically have limited access to educational, health, and financial resources. As a trusted member of the community whose staff can relate to program participants because of their own first-hand experience living in Potrero Hill or public housing, The Nabe fills important voids in the lives of people most in need.

Focus on Youth

Our programming focuses heavily on youth development, with a strong emphasis on education. Because 80% of children who participate in Nabe programs receive low-income free lunch provisions, we also provide nutritious meals and snacks for kids participating in our programs.

The Challenges We Address

Public housing youth can experience a myriad of traumas including hunger, homelessness, physical-emotional abuse, foster care, and parents in prison. These youth often lack the support structure to academically achieve in ways that will ultimately result in stable livelihoods.

The Nabe provides the stability, support, and opportunities these young people need to thrive.

Edward Hatter, Executive Director

Under Edward's leadership, The Nabe has maintained its commitment to serving the community with compassion and dedication. His multi-generational ties to Potrero Hill and deep understanding of the community's needs guide our mission every day.

"Seeing the kids in the community—they're now young adults with children who are now coming through here, which is so important. I know for a fact the faces that I see that have come through this house—we definitely made an impact on them."
